Does Follow Up Boss AI Replace a Follow-Up System?

Follow Up Boss added a real AI suite this year, and the obvious question for any mortgage team running it is whether that changes the follow-up problem. Short version: it helps with the note-taking and the first draft, but the moment a lead replies, the work still lands on a person.
Quick answer: Follow Up Boss AI does not replace a follow-up system. Smart Messages drafts texts and emails a person edits and sends, Smart Summaries recaps only eligible calls made through an FUB number, and FUB says Automations do not send drip texts — so after a lead replies, follow-up falls back to someone remembering.
What Follow Up Boss AI actually does now
Follow Up Boss AI summarizes calls, drafts messages, suggests next-step tasks, and builds triggers — it does not send anything on its own. The suite shipped this year and, per the teardown at followupace.com, it includes Smart Summaries, Smart Messages, suggested tasks, and predictive lead prioritization at no extra charge, though several features lean on the paid FUB Calling data to work at all.
Here is the honest line through each piece. Smart Messages suggests AI-written texts and emails built from the lead's history, but FUB's own help doc shows the agent edits the draft and presses send. Smart Actions reviews a call and texts the agent a suggested stage or appointment update to approve with yes or no, with a two-hour reminder — nothing updates until the agent taps yes. Automations 2.0 merges the old Action Plans and trigger-based automation into one visual drag-and-drop builder, and FUB says existing automations and action plans migrate automatically.
All of that is useful. It cuts note-taking, it gives you a starting draft, it reminds you to touch a stage. But read it carefully: every one of those features ends at a human. The AI writes, the person sends. The AI suggests, the person approves. That is the design, and it matters for the next question.
Does Follow Up Boss AI send texts on its own?
No. A person still presses send on every Smart Message, and Smart Actions changes nothing until the agent taps yes. Follow Up Boss built these features human-in-the-loop on purpose.
This is the part the feature reviews skip. The 2026 review at theclose.com praises the call summaries for cutting note-taking and scores FUB 4.2 out of 5, but it treats draft-and-suggest as if it closes the loop. It does not. A draft that sits in your compose window is not follow-up until someone reads it, decides it fits, and hits send. If your team is already behind on follow-up because nobody has time, a better draft does not fix the bottleneck — the bottleneck is the send, not the writing.
For the limit that trips up most loan teams, Follow Up Boss states plainly in its own FAQ that Automations can send an automatic first text to new leads but do not send drip texts. So the one thing that runs by itself is the first text. Everything after that is manual or it does not happen. We wrote about this exact pattern in why your lead follow-up automation dies the moment a lead replies: the sequence does its job until a human has to respond, and then it stops.
Which calls get a Smart Summary?
Only calls made through the FUB Number get a Smart Summary, and only calls between 15 seconds and 60 minutes — not transferred calls, and not calls on any other line. FUB's own call-summaries doc spells out the eligibility rules.
That is a bigger limit than it sounds for a mortgage team. If your loan officers call borrowers from their cell line, from the LOS dialer, or from any number that is not the FUB phone number, those calls produce no summary. FUB Calling is an add-on on the Grow plan and included on Pro and Platform, and the AI call summaries depend on the call-recording power-up, so the feature only works if you are paying for and routing calls through FUB's phone system. Smart Actions carries the same requirement: it needs FUB Calling, calls made through the FUB phone number, and call recording enabled.
One more thing worth knowing before you build around it. Smart Summary — the AI recap of a lead's whole history, not the per-call summary — is labeled a beta feature, and when checked, FUB's help doc carried a banner that it was in closed beta and temporarily turned off for all users. Treat anything labeled beta as a maybe, not a shipped feature you can staff around.
Can Automations 2.0 run a real text drip?
No. Automations 2.0 is a cleaner visual builder for triggers and action-plan steps, but Follow Up Boss says Automations send an automatic first text and do not send drip texts. The drip after that first text relies on manual texting.
The rebuild is genuinely nicer to use — drag-and-drop beats the old branching logic, and your existing plans move over without rework. But a nicer builder for the same capability does not change what the capability is. FUB's native automated texting is, in practice, an initial text plus manual texting, with the company number sending that first Action Plan text.
And there is a second reason the drip stays manual by design. In an Action Plan, a text step that ends in a question is meant to prompt a reply — and a reply pauses the automated sequence and hands the conversation back to the agent. That is correct behavior. You do not want a robot talking over a borrower who just answered. But it means the automation is built to stop exactly where the real conversation starts.
Where compliance limits still apply
The automated text that FUB does send still has to follow texting rules, and nothing in the AI suite changes that. The FCC's October 2026 order narrowed consent revocation and let senders name one exclusive opt-out method if they disclose it clearly in each message, and states like Pennsylvania (Act 47) now set quiet hours and ban Sunday sends. We covered both in new TCPA texting rules 2026 what loan officers need to know. FUB's AI drafts a message; it does not decide when you are allowed to fire it. Your compliance team sets those rules, and any system that keeps texting after a reply has to respect them.
FUB AI vs a follow-up system: what each covers
Follow Up Boss AI and a follow-up system solve different halves of the problem — FUB handles the draft and the summary, a follow-up system handles the continuation after a reply. The table below maps where each one stops.
| The job | Follow Up Boss AI | A follow-up system |
|---|---|---|
| First text to a new lead | Sends automatically | Sends automatically |
| Draft a text or email | Suggests, you edit and send | Writes and sends in your voice |
| Summarize a call | Yes, FUB-number calls only (15s–60m) | N/A — not its job |
| Continue after the lead replies | Stops; hands back to agent | Keeps going until the lead acts or is dead |
| Nudge a deal stalled on a document | Trigger-based reminder to you | Chases the borrower, escalates on a deadline |
| Carry context across LO-to-processor handoff | No | Yes |
| Sync FUB stages with the LOS | No native LOS integration | Keeps them in sync |
That middle row is the one that costs deals. This is the leak SalesOS is built for: it does the work between Follow Up Boss's steps — follow-up that continues after the reply, in your team's own templates and voice, until the lead acts or is clearly dead — without asking you to leave FUB or rip out a CRM your team already knows. Common mistakes when you lean on FUB's new AI
The usual trap is reading "FUB has AI now" as "follow-up is handled now." It isn't, and here is where teams get surprised.
- Assuming the first automated text means the whole sequence runs. It does not — FUB sends the first text, the rest is manual.
- Routing calls off the FUB number and expecting summaries. Cell-line and LOS-dialer calls produce no Smart Summary at all.
- Building around Smart Summary as if it shipped. It is beta and has been turned off; the per-call summaries are the reliable piece.
- Treating a draft as a sent message. A Smart Message in the compose window is not follow-up until a person hits send.
- Expecting FUB AI to sync your LOS or carry loan stage across a handoff. It does neither; that is still a separate chain, which we broke down in Follow Up Boss + LOS Sync: Why Stages Don't Match.
None of this is a knock on Follow Up Boss. The AI it shipped is real and it saves time on the parts it covers. The point is to be clear-eyed about the line: FUB drafts, summarizes, suggests, and triggers; a person still sends, and the follow-up resumes manually the moment a lead replies.
FAQ
Does Follow Up Boss AI replace my follow-up system?
Follow Up Boss AI does not replace a follow-up system. It drafts messages, summarizes eligible calls, and suggests tasks, but a person sends every message and the automated sequence stops the moment a lead replies, so the continuation is still manual.
Do Follow Up Boss Smart Messages send automatically?
Smart Messages do not send automatically. The feature suggests an AI-written text or email built from the lead's history, and the agent edits that draft and presses send.
Which calls get a Smart Summary in Follow Up Boss?
Smart Summaries are generated only for calls made through the FUB Number, only for calls between 15 seconds and 60 minutes, and not for transferred calls. Calls on a cell line or the LOS dialer get no summary.
Can Automations 2.0 send a text drip in Follow Up Boss?
Automations 2.0 cannot send a text drip. Follow Up Boss states that Automations can send an automatic first text to new leads but do not send drip texts, so the follow-up after that first text relies on manual texting.
Do I have to leave Follow Up Boss to get follow-up that continues after a reply?
Leaving Follow Up Boss is not required. A follow-up system can run alongside FUB and do the work between its steps, continuing the conversation after a lead replies in your team's voice while FUB stays the CRM your team already uses.
If your follow-up keeps dying where FUB's does — right after the reply — that is the gap worth fixing before you buy more leads. Book a demo and we'll map exactly where your current FUB setup stops and what it would take to keep the follow-up going.
